This is a draft of the first of many letters that I will be sending en masse to the residents of my city.
My dearest fellow American,
You have been living in fear. The time has come for that to change. The time is now for you to set your fears aside and take a closer look at the world around you.
Note the corruption in our government. Perceive the death and suffering so dominant in nations not as fortunate as our own. Come to terms with the fact that you have so willingly been trading in your freedoms for the false concept of safety.
Now, right this moment, ask yourself what you will do about it.
Will you continue to live in apathy as the world around you darkens and decays? Will you continue to sit in front of your Television, contentedly absent-minded, while corporations rake in billions of dollars thanks to unjustifiable wars? Will you stand back and do nothing as our government continues to lie to us?
My dearest fellow American, you have become lazy and are on the verge of not only losing your freedoms, but no longer deserving them. Your fear will become your downfall. One man with a gun can control a hundred without one. Similarly, you have let our government spiral out of control and have given them the other end of the chains which are shackled around your hands.
Why? Because you live in fear. And what exactly is it that you fear? Losing your life? Dying in a “terrorist attack?” Are you afraid that your American brother down the street with a different skin color may perhaps be hiding a can of anthrax in his basement? Is fear justification enough to allow our government to arrest anyone they want without a stated reason?
You have allowed the creation of a nation which can very easily become a police state in the hands of the wrong person. Perhaps we are already in the hands of the wrong person. Due to fear, we have allowed the Executive Branch to acquire more power that should be permissible. The system of checks and balances no longer exists. Our constitution is viewed as “just a piece of paper” and still, you stand back and do nothing. You dwell in fear, willingly allowing everything our nation once stood for to dissolve and erode as the winds of fear keep you from acting.
Perhaps you fear that which you don’t understand. Perhaps you fear the reason America is hated, rather than fearing those who hate us. My dearest fellow American, the reasons are out there. Our nation is not innocent. We have spilt innocent blood in the name of democracy. It is time that we start to clean the bloodstains off democracy’s name. It is time we show the world what a real democracy can do.
It is time we show our government what a population without fear can do. It is time we start reclaiming our nation, piece by piece.
On this day, my dearest follow American, I want you to throw your fear aside and see the truth. There is hope yet for our nation. Do not be afraid. Love your neighbor, no matter what skin color they have, and join together in speaking out, protesting, acting on your beliefs, and resisting that which you know is wrong.
With all sincerity, John Titan
